Overview

GIIGS: For live music fans who love discovering new sounds, GIIGS makes it easy to find emerging bands, catch upcoming shows, grab merch, and support artists—all in one place. With a portion of ticket sales going to musicians and options for direct donations, GIIGS brings fans and musicians closer, creating a seamless way to support and enjoy live music.

Starting thoughts
• People often struggle to search across social media, ticketing sites, and venue pages just to find local gigs by emerging artists.

• As a result, music lovers miss gigs they’d enjoy, leading to lost chances for fans and artists to connect.

• Local and emerging bands often lack the resources to promote themselves effectively to potential listeners.
Solution
The goal was to create a platform that connects live music lovers with emerging bands, overcoming typical discovery barriers—like fragmented communication and lack of visibility on major ticketing sites—through a single source. Importantly, it also needed to support emerging bands and strengthen local music scenes nationwide.

User Research

Following my preliminary research, I administered a 12-question survey titled 'Gigs and Venues’ that asked participants aged 16–65+ about their music preferences, venue inclinations and the likeliness of donating directly to artists.

Insights:

Delving into the respondents’ challenges and preferences served as a strong source of inspiration and helped form the foundation of the design process.

Competitor Analysis:

Engaging with these competitor platforms enabled me to further empathise with the challenges faced by live music-lovers looking for emerging bands. Additionally, an examination of user reviews of each platform helped me identify the following issues:

• Complex account creation progress
• Complicated checkout process
• Unsynchronised communications between bands and venues
• Absence of support for bands through donations or merch purchases
• Little to no engagement between live music-lovers
• Lack of music preference personalisation

Challenges

• Undertaking my second product design project was a noteworthy challenge – but I feel that I was up to the task and felt particularly motivated by the project’s theme and purpose.

• Meeting the project requirements within the two-week timeframe pushed me to employ strong time management skills, which was both demanding and exciting.

• The moments where I questioned my ability to handle the challenge were inevitable, but taking breaks to recalibrate and reconnect with the purpose of the project was incredibly helpful.

What I learnt

Comprehensive understanding: Delivering optimal design outcomes necessitates a profound comprehension of the underlying concept – an invaluable lesson I gained through this experience

Effective research: A well-executed research phase accelerates the generation of valid and efficient design ideas, streamlining the creative process

Tool proficiency: Using various new design tools expanded and strengthened my design skill set

Resilience and feedback: While feedback is crucial, maintaining belief in one's ideas is equally important. Resilience in the face of critiques ensures the preservation of innovative concepts

Strategic constraints: The realisation that setting constraints is pivotal for avoiding chaos and ensuring focused design efforts
